The 415 area code was one of the original three California area codes, covering the central region of the state. The first major split of the 415 area code occurred in 1959 when the 707 and 408 codes were created for the North and South Bay areas. The next split occurred on September 2, 1991 when the 510 area code was created for the East Bay and Oakland. The 415 code was split again on August 2, 1997, leaving only San Francisco and its immediate surroundings within the 415 coverage area, and relegating the southern portion of the old code to the new 650 area code.
The 415 area code covers Marin County and San Francisco County, on opposite ends of the bay.
Included in those counties are the cities
of San Francisco, Daley, Belvedere, Ignacio, Kentfield, Marin City, Muir Woods,
San Anselmo, Woodacre, Brisbane, and Sausolito.
