The 631 area code covers the vast majority of Eastern Long Island, providing coverage to the residents of Suffolk County. The area covered by the 631 area code was originally a part of the 914 area code in 1947, when the original five area codes were implemented for New York State. In 1951, the 516 area code was created solely for Long Island. On November 1, 1999, the 516 area code was split to create the 631 coverage area, with the 516 code retained for Nassau County on the western half of Long Island.
