The area covered by the 845 area code was originally covered by the 914 area code, and was created in 1947. As Westchester County continued to grow, the 845 area code was created to provide coverage to the remaining counties in the original 914 coverage area. On June 5, 2000 the 914 area code was created with permissive dialing. In January of 2001, permissive dialing ended and the counties within the 845 coverage area were required to start using the area code.
The 845 area code, after going into effect in 2000, took over coverage for Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, Ulster, and Sullivan Counties. It also provides coverage for parts of Columbia, Greene, Delaware, and Dutchess Counties.
Towns and small cities provided coverage by the 845 area code include Kingston, Middletown, Westpoint, Saugerties, Garrison, New Paltz, Cold Spring, Clarkstown, and Nelsonville.
