In the North American Numbering Plan, area code 917 was established to service cell phones, pagers and voice mail in New York City’s five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Now area code 917 also services a limited number of telephone land lines in Manhattan.

• 917 Service Specific

When area code 917 was originally created it became the first service specific area code by being assigned only to devices that provide designated services.
 However, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) banned the practice of creating additional service specific area codes but allowed area code 917 to retain its current customers plus add land lines.

• 917 Overlay

Area code 917 is also an overlay code for New York City’s other area codes 212, 347, 646 and 718. This means that area code 917 can be dialed with a ten-digit telephone number from area codes 212, 347, 646 and 718 without the need for the North American long distance prefix “1”.
